I absolutely love this album, the way it sounds, the level of meaning behind the lyrics, it’s just great. Listen to it nonstop and is definitely underrated when you look at his body of work.
My only critique...
Whatever the female singer adds in after every time Rick says "if you think you’re groovy” is enough to ruin that song. The song would be 10x Better without that little ad lib, but still a great song and even better record.
underrated!!

about 4 songs or so are kinda forgettable, but a solid half of this record is great! Some of his best songs, and this was the best record he would do for about 20 years, until Venus In Overdrive came out. (Did not care for what fell between these two records - too dark and not enough melody). Faves are Woman, Tear It All Down, Honeymoon In Beirut, and One Reason!
Running out Gas a little.

Probably the weakest album of Springfield's so far. Some good songs but quite a bit of filler. Rock of Life is a good song as is Honeymoon in Beruit. Tear it all down is ok but most of the rest is filler. Still too synth heavy, so much so that the guitars are drown out but it is a step in the right direction from Toa in that catagory.
Love it!!!

I think people always underrated Rick Springfield's music. The songs in this album are very well written & say alot, one just has to listen! The music is also very catchy! I find this album to be very thought provoking & one of his best. It is definitely worth buying!

I have to admit that this one fell into the dustbin that my music collection has become over the last decade..... and I am ashamed of myself. I recently "rediscovered" this ABSOLUTE GEM of an album & have gone back to playing it almost every single day, just like I did in my late teens & early twenties. If I had to rename this album it would probably be something like "Rick Springfield: RAW" as it's music & lyrics are just so incredibly heartfelt you are compelled to listen to this in its entirety. This collection is frank, revealing, & truly a cathartic body of work from an early eighties pop megastar that fell of the map. This album was his return to the music scene after many years & it reveals someone who went through a great deal of soul-searching & personal growth. As a self-professed "eighties metalhead" I found this to be a "guilty pleasure" & this was played nearly daily (sometimes two or three times in a row) when I was cleaning the house or working on the car. I introduced a few people to this album back then because of its collection of "real" & "soulful" tunes that were a rarity in commercial radio at the time (& still are to some extent) & only one picked up on it (which also became a staple in his musical rotation). Make NO MISTAKE, this album is PURE POP through and through (which means no heavy riffs or deep seated brooding going on.) This breaks the mold in the respect that it is anything BUT vapid, unconscious, or heartless in its approach that seemed to clog the airwaves of mainstream, popular radio of its time. Satellite & the internet have forever changed the face of radio so if you are discovering "old music" for the first time, then please, by all means, pick this up. You will find something of a rarity for its time, & one that most people overlooked because of the nature of commerclal radio at the time of its release. If you are like me, "rediscovering" some forgotten musical gemstones, then make sure you get yourself a digital copy & keep it on the cloud because this album never goes out of style, it's just too much heart. It truly is "The Rock of Life."
This album is great. I got it when it came out originally and still love these songs!!!

If there is one track that reminded me of how great this album was. It's "Hold On To Your Dream", what an awesome pop/rock track from the "Rock of Life". Totally eighties, totally awesome!

I have always been a fan of Rick's starting in the pink suit days. His music has evolved, though, and I think this album was the turning point. It is, in a word, soulful.
