Homeland (Audio Version)

A great album. I just want to mention the video bonus that comes with the album purchase - it's interesting to see how the digitally-enhanced violin works, and great to see the way that her face lights up while explaining it.

obnoxious and self -indulgent

By far Laurie Anderson's best album. Difficult and tender and funny and oh so complex. This is a brilliant portrait of the time we live in. Both intimate and political, it is hard to find its equal anywhere else in any way. Great great album.

i found Homeland to be a stunningly beautiful release. The Beginning of Memory is the only track i found very reminiscent of her early work. all of the other tracks are quite understated, melodic and rather mesmerizing (with one rather boisterous exception). that exception being Only an Expert which is an aggressive track which features dissonant Lou Reed guitars and a heavy electro-beat. upon hearing the first few seconds i rather winced but by the end of the track i found the approach not only worked but was possibly the only acceptable one for the subject matter; angry and outraged. anger is an energy and the track has it in spades. as for the 'disappointed' review below, this is THE ONLY TRACK which seems in any way relevant to that review which expressed disappointment that the track wasn't what was previously presented at a specific performance he saw and doesn't seem to approve of some else's personal life. both are really irrelevant to a review of this release. this may be the best and most introspective writing in whole Laurie Anderson has committed to a studio release. of all the music i've heard released yet this year (which is considerable) this may be my top choice for the best release of the year yet far. kudos to Anderson and thank you for a stunning, personal and timely collection of work.

This body of work is truly worth the wait. Intellectually and musically it simply soars, taking us to places that not even Laurie has taken us before. "Another Day In America" is absolutely breath taking, Laurie at her best. These are some of Laurie's most emotional offerings, often heartbreaking and thought-provoking. Her level of genius is off the charts here, Im sure this will take it's rightful place with my other Anderson favorites. Can't wait to see the live show, I've seen her three times and got to meet her twice. She is a tiny and lovely women and one of the most friendly performers I've ever met. Looking forward to more "difficult" yet brilliant music.

Everybody's got an opinion about Laurie Anderson, and especially about how her marriage to Lou Redd has affected her music and career. This is the best piece of work she's done in quite some time. It's different than her earlier work, which was spoken over music, instead of sung, as it is here. Anderson is always pushing boundaries -- sometimes her experiments work, sometimes they don't. But you can't fault her for trying. This one works.
