Reviews

  • Too underrated!

This album is one of Streisand's best, no question. From what I've gathered from reviews, etc, it is highly underrated. I bought this one on a whim and was immediately pleased with it and grew into it in rapid order! This one evokes a great mood. The gems include "Superman", "I found you love", "Answer Me", "My heart belongs to Me", and "NY State of Mind".
  • Not super but not bad either...

Though an overall improvement over most of her studio albums released in the early 70's, this is certainly not a standout. Streisand's voice is, of course, spectacular. Unfortunately, much of the material here is not. Like some of the songs on her more inferior albums several tracks here sound dated, either lyrically or musically - track #4 is a prime example. It appears that Streisand's romantic involvement with Jon Peters during this span of years sometimes clouded her better judgement regarding choice of material and their corresponding arrangements and production. Still, this album foreshadows the success she would soon go on to have recording contemporary pop music. After yet another lackluster release to follow in Songbird, Streisand would go on to create some of her very best work collaborating with Barry Gibb, who of course could offer much more in terms of musical skill and talent than Jon Peters. My favorite song here is most definately the title track, an overlooked gem amongst her many great singles.

The three redeeming songs on this lp are "Superman," "My Heart Belongs To Me," and her worthy cover of Billy Joel's "New York State Of Mind." The two former songs will find a home on her "Greatest Hits 2" lp and "New York State Of Mind" will be used on her "Memories" collection. The overall mastering is "AAD" typical of 80's cd mastering but the levels are a bit louder than her "Greatest Hits 2" making this cd a more pleasant listen. Barbra sounds a bit more "soulful" on this effort and "My Heart Belongs To Me" was thought to be sung by a Black woman before Barbra's name was mentioned. Her ego was attacked by recent press during the making of this album and like the All Music Guide opening review stated, this lp is a personal expression.

Streisand sings a little lighter music for this album, but manages to still show her power and range. You cannot go wrong with Supreman, My heart belongs to me, and New York State of Mind. One or the great femals vocalists of the last half of the 20th century.

Barbra in the 80's was as great as Barbra in the 60's, 70's, 90's and now 2000's! She is an icon that continues to outdo herself! The song "My Heart Belongs to Me" is fabulous, loved it!
