Barbra shows singers how to do it. She has always been far ahead and above anyone else.

This album--like Barbra's first before it and third after it--is a master class. No one even comes close to her gift for phrasing, interpretation, and vocal style. These are standards, some of which had been recorded by many of her peers, and some that hadn't been recorded for decades. Her versions are consistently fresh, different and exciting. What can be added that hasn't already been acknowledged about this superb talent. She's the voice of a generation.

This lp, released six months after it's predecessor, follows pretty much the same formula as the first, indeed most of these songs and the material for the first lp were recorded at the same session(s). As the All Music Guide already mentioned, attention turned to the pen of Harold Arlen, he would record his own album of self-penned songs and Barbra would "special guest" on that lp, singing a gorgeous "House Of Flowers" solo and would duet with Arlen on a 60's style go-go arrangement of "Ding Dong, The Witch Is Dead." Harold's singing style can be described as "eclectic." This lp features magnificent work, the definitive reading of "When The Sun Comes Out," a spirited "Gotta Move" which would find a place on her "Greatest Hits" lp and a re-cut for the soundtrack to her television special "Color Me Barbra," my favorite version of "My Coloring Book," Dusty Springfield also cut this song and it's a second favorite for me, a spirited "Lover, Come Back To Me" and the classic "I Stayed Too Long At The Fair" which deserved more attention than it received. This album dispels the "sophomore slump" myth. Like the lp before it, this 1963 lp was remastered and re-released in 1993.

This woman is one of the most talented and she needs to be heard. You may dislike her for her politics and all the media attention, but if you revist her past creative endeavors you will understand why she matters.
