  • What a great covers album

Before I dig in on this one, let me just say that the possibly only downside to this album is the fact that the $5.98 EP released or given away back in ‘87 is permanently obsolete now that it was integrated here. Doesn’t mean that the original copies of that extended play are without value (except maybe now that Metallica released it onto iTunes for whatever reason despite Garage Inc having spent more availability time on the platform), just pointless. But as Allmusic pointed out in their review of Garage Inc, Metallica needed to justify the reissue of this commodity and thus gave us this. Garage Inc might be my second favorite Metallica album after Ride The Lightning, because through covering these songs they actually represented all their eras from Kill Em All to ReLoad in genre and style, somehow functioning as a greatest hits album despite no actual Metallica written content appearing anywhere. Disc 1 is the Load era covering old punk and classic rock in imaginative ways, all while gaining back some of their aggressive side they lost after 1991’s Metallica. Disc 2? I can’t see any Metallica fan denying how good these covers are on this disc, because it’s the Kill Em All to 1991 self titled era covering punk and NWOBHM bands. In fact you even get to hear Cliff Burton on Am I Evil and Blitzkrieg, and Newsted annihilate and crush it on Crash Course in Brain Surgery and The Small Hours. The latter is definitely on my top ten Metallica songs because it’s so nasty raw and heavy. You also get unheard b sides (cover songs of course like everything else) of singles that otherwise wouldn’t have seen the light of day had not Metallica decided to drop the $5.98 EP into the open. Their choices in bands to cover is sort of impressive due to the seeming lack of connection to the music they made back in the 80’s, but that doubt gets removed once you actually hear them do it. They may have built their reputation and legacy on albums like Master of Puppets or Metallica, but for me this the way to get into Metallica because it has everything that they have done stylistically and then some. I’m also relieved that iTunes finally started labelling certain Metallica songs explicit especially the ones on here. Why did So What escape the Parental Advisory label for so long despite having a plethora of colorful language and wholesome lyrics? I bet Lars was behind that…

Ok great album but I need some clarification so kill em all, ride the lightning and master of puppets had cliff as the bassist cliff dies then Jason gets replaced as the bassist then quits shortly after bc his bass was extremely quiet in and justice for all the Robert is in the black album and stays. Please write a review answering my question🙏

This is a great cover album, they played all the songs in their own style, and they all sound very good, maybe even better than the originals.

This album is so good. The fact that they took a Queen song and made it sound good is so cool. Die Die My Darling’s tempo reminds me of old school Metallica. Turn the Page was a good song already. But, then Metallica covered the song. And then I heard “Tuesday’s Gone.” And I was like,”What an interesting, but good cover.”

What’s with the negative reviews? It’s Metallica baby, turn it up loud so the neighbors can hear it. (Whether they like it or not.)

So good. Just awesome. Metallica does everything amazing (except maybe st anger) Top 5? - The Prince - Breadfan - Die Die Die My Darling - Killing Time - It’s Electric shoutout to Whiskey In a Jar, of course. Not quite my style but still a great song. Great great work here.

Metallica has not been the same since Jason left. This was the last time they were Metallica.
