I have been a Fluffophile and serial abuser of The Code International since I met Steve at a cafe in Amsterdam, sometime in the late 20th Century (only 1999, but that sounded so... classical). Know this - Steve's music is as hard to put a label on as it is a joy to experience. Never mind tryin to describe it. This album, The Code, was my first exposure to his sartorial mix of depraved syncopations, delicious riffs and classical/jazz overtones (I think I traded him a Tower of Power CD for it). The Code benefits from Steve's heartfelt love and understanding of Zappa, his own chamber music etudes and a musical vocabulary that I can only characterize as FREE. Never afraid to mix plaid and pastels, run with scissors or play Oingo Boingo on a cello; Steve exhibits his musical fearlessness in the kickass basslines he lays down on 'Monophonic Wheeze' while the wailing sax creepin into the mix almost hurts your ear... But not quite. Meanwhile, watch out goin to the bridge in 'Strewnbuggy', cause Steve's gonna put some Double O Funk shot in ya where the Lord done split ya. Click and listen... you'll be shakin it in a matter of seconds. One never knows where Steve will lead you when he grabs you by the ear - but it's always somewhere groovy and a place you most definitely have never, ever been before.

I first heard of Steve's music from the "Super Size Me" soundtrack, and felt I should hear more. His ability to mix both organic and synthesized instruments is just great. People with an open mind will definitely enjoy this one. And I think everyone could enjoy the song "Oh Chicken".
