If you like this kind of thing, then you'll LOVE this particular kind of this thing. Plonsey and Barrett take their instruments out to the edge and beyond, thanks to the mad conceptions of the Instant Composers. Stretching their sax chops to the limit, the two chase each other around the musical space, one moment clambering to the edgiest heights (Road Map) and the other plumbing the depths of audibility (Some Ones Apartment, the 13th Region). The Message is a delightful piece of whimsy, and The Sound of Dirt a wistfully elegaic respite from the insanity. A great reminder of the late mad genius of Randy Hostetler (and the continued mad genius of Steve Horowitz).

This record was actually recorded back in 1996, and I’m very happy it has been released. I’ve always been a fan of anything in which Steve Horowitz has been involved, (and this album supports that conclusion). Just about every reed instrument is used in every which way; exploring textures sounds, harmonies, ect. The styles in several of the bird-inspired pieces bring to mind a mixture of Messiaen and Modern Jazz. Very interesting. Very original.
