Not The Best, But They Still Got It

Coheed And Cambria is one of those few bands that I can listen to their whole catalogue front-to-back, and not get bored. This may not be the best Vaxis album in the quintilogy released so far, but it’s still a strong offerring. Even if it doesn’t quite reach the heights of A Window Of The Waking Mind.
Let me explain why I say all this: Bands constantly evolve, for better or worse. C&C do this almost flawlessly, but lately the “prog” element is taking a backseat to the stories that play out. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though, as songwriting is almost as complex as making the music itself. But some songs on here don’t quite make sense. Particularly, “Blind Side Sonny” is a bit more generic than the rest: It’s too punk-y, and it’s hard to legibly understand what Claudio is even saying.
All that aside, I still give this album 5 stars because the band is still consistent with their releases, and each album has some of the best music prog metal has to offer.
Check out the first two Vaxis albums, The Unheavenly Creatures and the aforementioned A Window Of The Waking Mind, but also give a listen to From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness (what I consider to be their best), so that you can see the evolution this band has gone through.

Their best album in fifteen years, guaranteed to reacquire prog rock fans who shied away from Vaxis 1 and 2. The Continuum Suite is epic beyond any ability to describe in a blurb review. 10/10 massive recommend

Lots of variety and emotional themes. To my musical taste, I find Someone Who Can and Searching for Tomorrow as two of the best tracks they’ve put out since the third album (my personal favorite). However, in totality, I find Father of Make Believe to be the weakest of the trilogy. Not a bad album by Coheed by any means, but for me Vaxis 2 is the peak of these three installments. However, I did love many of the references and motifs throughout the tracks such as the piano overture of Domino the Destitute from the 6th album in Tethered Together. All in all a solid release, but more tracks I’d be willing to skip than the first two Vaxis series releases.
great one
