Yep, I pretty much agree w/JazzyBeachGirl1101…coming from a classically trained background as a lifelong pianist…I can say w/absolute certainty that the sax 🎷🎷🎷🎷line makes this song❣️❣️❣️
I was 6y.o. when it came out, playing on MTV(US🇺🇸)all the time. Yes, George Michael was a star 💫. But ‘84, like ‘92, was a great year in modern music! If this song was just George singing, I think it would’ve gotten lost in the crowd. But his timbre of velvet goes so well w/that sexual-sensual sound that we expect from a solo sax line in a given (yet rare) pop song.
This melodic theme, in it’s 1st few bars to that lower pitch as it walks right back up to the 🎷melody, just oozes (yummy) the emotions coming from the artist. The subtlety of the bass & the sparse but effective acoustic guitar are the other highlights that shine thru the “polished” synths & percussion🥁🪘.
All of it helps propel the song to where George takes it. But it’s really the added🎷that captured it from a limbo amongst the breadth of music (& noise) & shoots it into the stratosphere of that era, dare I say thru 2day as well!
For all his fans that didn’t know him, as w/all those that pass so young; working through life’s inner & outermost struggles for all the🌍2C (un&intended, finding🎶as 1 of life’s greatest healers), his talents & devotion to music, & for what he cared about most publicly; will always be his legacy, for as long as we carry it…🎶🎵🎼🎤💔❤️🩹💝RIP❣️😇.
