....and I was fortunate to see the tour for this album as a GI stationed in Germany . I was a minor fan of the band before I saw them live and became a huge fan after seeing them. Mark Knopfler is an amazing guitarist and this CD helps to show his creativeness. A must buy CD for anyone that appreciates "guitar" music.
  • A timeless classic!

The iTunes review of this album does not do justice to the tremendous compositional virtuosity of Mark Knopfler and the largely overlooked versatility of the Dire Straits rock and roll band. While the Straits made their name with the earlier, radio friendly hits like Sultans of Swing and Lady Writer, their multi-dimensional musical repertoire shines through on the experimental masterpiece, Private Investigations, and the lyrically moving title track, Love Over Gold. While the longer run times may make this album less radio friendly, and thus less appreciated by pithy pop music crits, the songs are a masterful tribute to Knopfler's storytelling prowess and guitar ingenuity. The opening track, Telegraph Road, is Knopfler's tour de force and should always be mentioned with the likes of Stairway To Heaven and Comfortably Numb in the ranks of epic songwriting achievements that will forever bask in perpetual rock glory.

When I was 15 or 16 (early 80s) I heard Industrial Disease and immediately went out and bought this album thinking these Dire Straits folks must write a bunch of poppy, dance tunes. To my shock it was all this mellow, melodic piano/guitar duets. Disappointed, the album sat unlistened to until one day I put it on again and listened... and let it wash over me. I was hooked. Telegraph Road is one of the great rock masterpieces of Knopfler's generation. Amazing stuff.
