I have a lot of ambient music and if you listen to this genre you know that "ambient" covers a lot of ground. I think I would call this pensive music. It's not the kind of music that lulls you to sleep or makes you float away into space or just sit in the background as filler music. It is meditative, beautiful and perfect for sitting and thinking. And what makes the album good as an album is that it flows very nicely together. Each song strung together is kind of like a development of a single thought. It quiets your mind and centers you. It's easily one of the top three or four ambient albums in my collection. Nicely done!
Great Album. If you like..

First Narrows is a great album. If you enjoy this type of minimal music, I strongly urge you buy Minilouge: Animals (2Disc). Truely amazing album. Every second.

My favorite Loscil album. The last two tracks in particular, 'Brittle' and 'Cloister' are slowly becoming two of my favorite ambient songs of all time. They're just so mellowed out; not moody like Brain Eno tracks mind you, just very, very relaxed, with good use of glitchy textures and a strong sense of style. And the whole album is like that. Very enjoyable and fun to listen to under many different conditions, be it night or day, winter or summer, or what have you.

I was never really into drone or minimalist electronica until I heard this album. I had heard of it before and knew of some of its more prominent artists, but I could never get into the state of mind needed to really listen to it. But then I discovered this album and I couldn't stop listening to it. Ema and Brittle are hauntingly beautiful, but Sickbay is one of my favorite songs ever. But one of the things I like most about the album is the mood that it conveys. The entire experience seems like it was meant to reflect something dreary and gray. It reminds me personally of the time i went to furniture store on a sad monotone day. Although I have enjoyed all of Loscil's further efforts, especially Strathcoma Variations, this will always be my favorite.

Very, very creative ambient, experimental electronica. This album will really make you feel. Very beautiful hauting pieces. Perfect blend of ambient with a touch of drum machines and beats. I think Loscil really did a great job in this album of adding just the perfect touch of beats to the sound, which could easily have been overdone. Great for a long drive or while you are alone drinking a bottle of wine. Definitely worth the $10.
Elegant, serene, awake

Very hard to avoid describing this album as "perfect" and stopping there. Electronic, but that doesn't matter. The sounds are organic too. Quiet, but more like quiet watchfulness than like passive dozing. Ambient, but full of rhythm. Passes like a cloud, but it's carefully controlled and beautifully made. I give up. Buy now.

One of the most uplifting albums I have heard in a long time. Outstanding in the realm of ambient records and, I am inclined to believe, Loscil's best work to date (including his latest LP, Plume). Both genial and resonant, First Narrows has a life that one would not expect to find in an arrangement of ambient electronic music - due mainly to the incorporation of musicians playing live on each track. Comparative to its surrounding works, this record is particularly moving because it is sparsely melancholic. With the exception of Lucy Dub, which separates the suspiciously similar - yet incessantly pleasing - Sickbay and First Narrows, these songs emanate a warmth in their major harmonic content that feel like an auditory velvet robe which you would rather not take off.

Knows his realm well- Scott takes you along for the alpha wave ride of your waking life. Same can be said of "Submers" and "Triple Point"
Very consistent in the quality of his work- rather rare after third album.
I'll save the 5th star for next album...
