Tremendous production but a disappointing cast recording

Have seen the current production five times now and it is spectacular. I was really looking forward to this cast album but was surprised that the audio engineers opted to place all the voices directly in the middle of soundfield. There is no sense of space or placement on stage. In a world with Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio this just seems a shame. Compare this to the better Sondheim recordings (e.g. Putting It Together from Sunday in the Park with George) and the difference is night and day. Still glad to have a record of this amazing cast but it could have been so much better.
They got it right the 1st time.

I'm happy to support any Sondheim musical being revived, but each time they bring it back only shows how right they got it the first time.
This version only occasionally comes close. And what is up with Red Riding Hood? Did the director ask her 'How shrill can you be and still have it be singing?' She's painful to listen to. She's absoultely terrible. Ruins every number she's in. Remakes are great, but don't try to reinterpret near perfection, it only highlights how far short you come up.
These 3 are for the ITunes

Received it as 2 separate albums…separating the order of songs that I can’t listen to in order unless I take the time to create a playlist. And taking the time to do that is not worth the money I paid for this.

Was super excited to see Sara Bareilles and Phillipa Soo step into one of my favorite broadways shows. It’s safe to say they are the only thing that is good about this casting. No emotion from the others. Brian d’Arcy James is usually very good, but he just sounds bored with the content. Patina Miller sounds like the CW is forcing another Riverdale season down our throat, starts off mediocre but by the end of it (Last Midnight), it’s really just an insult to the ears.
Everything we could’ve wished for

Absolutely excellent recording of this perfect cast. Can’t believe we’re so lucky to have this cast captured so beautifully to listen to whenever we want. What a gift.
The best show...with the best cast!

I’ve been waiting all summer for this album to drop. I’m thrilled they put it together with most of the original cast from Encores. The highlight for me is Julia Lester’s Little Red...her interpretation of “I know things now...” will most assuredly become this songs new standard benchmark. Looking forward to many hours of listening pleasure.
I wanted to write a review…

This show was magic to watch and the cast recording captures the magic of Broadway. The only disappointment was that they did not bring Neil Patrick Harris as the Baker. He and Sara had incredible chemistry at City Center performance.
Absolute perfection..

Simply amazing, stellar, phenomenal, all the words. Second only to the original cast. I’ve already bought it once for me and once as a gift!
