  • Hisaishi's somber, minimal masterpiece

With how much clout Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" boasts, it's always been hard for me to believe neither Ghibli nor Hisaishi would ever match the transcendence achieved within that work. Who would have thought that nearly 14 years after his last film, Isao Takahata would finally etch his magnum opus into the annals of the Ghibli canon. And even more unbelievable still, Hisaishi would surpass his work on Spirited Away and create his most moving and powerful work in such sparse and haunting fashion, nearly the antithesis of what he created with Spirited Away. Simply breathtaking...I can't listen to this soundtrack and not begin to sob during nearly every piece. Yet somehow, something so achingly heartbroken, removes any and all fear from me, if only for a moment. Furthermore, never have I heard a musical and cinematic statement mesh so fluidly, as if becoming one indiscernible entity. This is what art should aspire to be in our modern day and age.

the story that inspired Sailor moon maybe? (with an add of adding planetary princess's.. which one sounds cooler??) i wanna see the new new movie about it!!.... she how ever on this looks like a tiny doll... adorable!.. omg i think Thumbelina was inspired by this.. or the other way around... or the Borrowers.. hello?? Tiny beings!.. this's also the 3rd Studio Ghibli character to wear a ponytail, first Sofie (braids) then Arrietty... the princess Sheeta (Castle in the sky).. was the first female character to have longer hair & tie her hair back up in a style... the rest like Kiki & Satsuki (Totoro) both had short brown hair & had the same looking dad. XD

This movie. This movie. I'm not one to easily give praise to any film, but this one was gorgeous in all aspects it can be. I still tear up when I think of the ending, and especially when I hear song like 'Moon' or 'The Parting'. The film as a whole was the most profound thing I've seen in a long time, and the soundtrack punctuated the emotion perfectly. It's just beautiful, and every song harbors emotion and memory that the listener can take ownership of for a minute.

If you ever want to feel pure happiness and bliss in a soundtrack I suggest you buy/listen to this masterpiece. This score alone is the reason why The Tale of Princess Kaguya is one of my favorite movies.

First of all I have to say the film itself is life changing( for me at least). Towards the end, I was on the verge of tears. A big part of the films beauty is this score. Great job Mr Hisaishi, you remain my favorite composer. If you are a fan of Joe Hisaishi, this is a must have!

No wonder this will be the best soundtrack of year for me, especially track "Procession of Celestial Beings"

For me, there are only two movies that matter this year: this and The Wind Rises. While Hisaishi's work for the latter is excellent as always, this soundtrack is truly one of the finest of his career. The central melody woven throughout many of these songs swells up in incredible bursts of emotion that echo the joy and wonder at being alive that the film expresses. These wordless pieces not only recall the beautiful movie, but contain within them the same essence that imbues Kaguya with life. Hisaishi also makes a bold choice by crafting a song as upbeat as "Procession of the Celestial Beings" for the sad moment in the movie during which it appears, but it successfully enhances the images on the screen and adds a further richness to the conclusion's complex message. Go out and see the movie, and then relive it by listening to this every day - I know I have.
