I adore this album and I adore Nina Simone. This is an organic project merging the soul and immense gratitude through the journey of Nina's prolific work. You won't be disappointed, in fact you might even find yourself 'Feeling Good'. Ha.

Heard "Four Women" on KCRW and swore it was some new unreleased Sade... Low & behold, it's Meshell. I'm only familiar with her popular songs. Never got into her albums though... I think the personality and Madonna vibe I saw early on turned me off to her. Will need to take a second look now. Couldn't afford the whole album but I'll come back n get the rest of it. Man, the ones I bought - Four Women, Nobody's Fault, and Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - take me to that magical time of day, just after sunset, when the sky is a brilliant pink, orange, purple and indigo all blended together. On the ridge of a high hill down in San Clemente, warm air from the valley to your back, cool breeze from the sea in front of you... Thank you MD. Enjoy! JP in Cali...

Meshelle has never been a predictable artist". Taking different routes on each album in the last 20 years. She commands her audience to come along and take a huge leap.
  • Gorgeous!

Gorgeous compilation of Nina Simone's songbook. My first time hearing these arrangements was during Meshell Ndegeocello's performance in Durham, NC. I was mesmerized by the ways in which she and her band moved the music not just forward, but let it flow outside of the edges of any specific category or genre, liberating us as she did the song from predefined structures.

I'm sorry but I found this album unlistenable. It infuriated me because both Nina and Meshell are great artists but I miss the point here. What sense would it make for someone to do an album of songs Joni Mitchell or Ricki Lee Jones did ? Their versions are definitive as are Nina's. 'Nuff sung/said The arrangements were the antithesis of what Nina used to do. To note, "Suzanne," was never done in a fast tempo by anyone before because the lyrics are plaintive and demand a sensitive setting. And the same for all the rest - The Anumals version of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood is more cohesive than this attempt which feigns never hearing their arrangement. I am bewildered by the purpose of this concept. I would rather hear ANYBODY else's versions of these songs and I am a Meshell fan. Who produced this ? Oh sorry - iTunes doesn't give us that information. I think this is a total blunder except for the credit ©2012 by naive. Meshell keep writing and be true to yourself.

This is a great album from one the truest artists on the scene today. Being that I love to dance.. I have "See Line Woman" and "House of.." on a loop on my iPad right now. When it gets to that moment at 2:15 on "House.." .. man, I am on the ceiling! The guest appearances are all great. The arrangements are stellar as usual. I know she's gonna kill the two above mentions songs when she does it live! Get this album!! Grade A+ stuff here.

i applaud meshell for her love for the great nina simone but this record falls short for me on all fronts. its always somewhat a problem when an artist takes on another artists point of view because in this case there is only one brilliant nina….so give a listen to her records and be ready to be moved. check out emergency ward and nina's choice and nina sings the blues and broadway ballads and blues and her very last recording-a single woman..it is sublime. <3
