  • Greatest album of al time just not in Atmos

If you’re a purist, you’ll hate the Atmos mix as I did. Ezy Ryder has changed for the worse and so did Izabella with the solo completely changed from the stereo mix. It’s a completely different solo take. The stereo solo on Izabella was almost deafening and powerful. The Atmos version lacks substance. Apple Music has the incorrect lyrics for Ezy Ryder as well. Earth Blues’s Atmos mix is horrible compared to its stereo counterpart. First Ray is supposed to be guitar heavy but these Atmos mixes put Jimis voice in front of everything. The Atmos mix made me tear up because it’s so bad. Thankfully I have the CD so I don’t need to worry for a long while.

Not my favorite Hendrix album but, it’s intense in the way that you think this is where Jimi was headed. Great album.
  • Jimi's Fourth Album!

This album was going to be released as a double LP and be Hendrix's follow-up to Electric Ladyland but he died before it could be released, so now it's here and I considar it to be his fourth album. He was trying out a lot of new things for this album and I think this album could have been HUGE if he hadn't died before the release. LONG LIVE JIMI HENDRIX!

Good review up top. I would add that a compilation released in the late 80s/early 90s (before the Hendrix family recovered the rights to the masters) called "Kiss the Sky" contained raw (unembellished) tracks of Stepping Stone and Room Full of Mirrors that are really worth seeking out. Additionally there is a short EP-length collection of tracks allegedly recorded in Hendrix's London flat in 1968 that contains an acoustic track of Angel, with some different lyrics, together with some jams that would evolve into 1983 among others, again all worth finding. I recommend those tracks in addition to First Rays of the New Rising Sun, not in lieu of them.

This album is one of my favorites. Even if there's some after the fact editing, the sound is what counts, and the sound is incredible. He's the gypsy, and he delivers on this one.

This was originally CRY OF LOVE and RAINBOW BRIDGE (with a few extra tracks thrown in). Post Band of Gypsies - Buddy Miles mostly gone, with Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell locking down the rhythm. Sure, these were issued after his death - but, i wouldn't consider COL & RB posthumous releases like the swarm of "lost jam session" effluvia that were soon to follow. He was actively working on these albums. I love The Experience, but, this is what really defined my Jimi-listening at the time. Playful as ever! Gorgeous and sometimes beautifully greasy stuff. Plus, he finally got a real bassist! Check out Cox's right-hand fingering mastery on Ezy Ryder. Sad he never got to play with Miles.

I know that a lot of people do not consider this an offical Jimi record becuase he wasn't alive when it was released. But it must be good for the Hendrix family to reissue the album which by the way has plenty of great songs on it like "Angel" and "Freedom". Don't fall for one of those fake hendirx albums on itunes and get this or the other three albums
