Best of the third phase of Morning Musume. Takahashi Ai leadership time period. Excellent music, pre-dub step/pre idol group super saturation. Sales were down (rise of the AKS Machine and wave II of K-pop). Still glad to have these on file :).
Defining Album of an Era

This album exemplifies Morning Musume under Takahashi Ai's leadership. From the spastic fun of Guru Guru Jump to the cool Take Off is Now, each girl sings songs that highlight her role in the group. SONGS is an impossibly cool opening number and Aika fans find her solo effort a treasure. A must buy for idol fans.

A Shining Star of J-Pop

Even if you can't speak a word of Japanese, that should not stop you from queuing up Platinum 9 by Morning Musume. It starts with a one-two punch ("Songs" and "Resonant Blue") and progresses to a power-pop finish ("Kanashimi Twilight"). While it borrows influences from many sources, this high-energy musical explosion stands on its own after the smoke clears.
This is by far the most mature release from J-Pop giants MM and producer Tsunku. Formed as a result of a talent search in 1997, Morning Musume is famous for graduating members and bringing in new blood through a process of public auditions; at times there could be a 10 year age discrepancy between the oldest and youngest performers. For the first time since its initial generation, all the members are approximately the same age which allows the material a greater sophistication overall and more authenticity when delivered. Tsunku, who writes and produces all of the material, has become expert at integrating both lead and background vocals into synthesized instruments. As voice and music cross-fade into each other, it harkens back to Brian Wilson's approach on Pet Sounds, though Platinum 9 is much more layered and frenetic.
This record is SO MUCH FUN! There are so many things going on in this tightly woven soundscape that it is dizzying. There is just so much to listen to ranging from silly to sublime. For non-speakers, the Japanese lyrics become symphonic elements. As for the English lyrics which are peppered throughout, they are nice reference points to get the overall gist of what is going on; in particular, track 8, "Mikan" carries a message of hope and encouragement in sharp contrast to American pop music which can often feel like commercially motivated iconoclasm.
Influences include, but are by no means limited to artists such as Kylie Minogue, Beyonce, T-Pain and Robert Schumann (yup, the 19th century composer) and genres like video game soundtracks, 50's rocknroll, techno, reggaeton and latin-pop. It is easy to be dismissive of pop music which sometimes is too cliché-ridden, but the clichés are turned on their ear in this case. Platinum 9 shines.
