  • stunning and unique combination of interrelated repertoire

This seemingly improbable combination of Bartok's 6th quartet from 1939 with Ravel's only quartet (1903), together with Mozart's tanscription of the E-flat Fugue from the WTK offers probing, breathtaking and unparalelled interpretations of all three works. The recorded sound in UC Davis - Mondavi Center's legendary Jackson Hall is utterly fabulous. The ASQ's Bartok crackles with electricity while saturated in the evocative romantic soundscape. Their Ravel is sinuously virtuosic and breathtakingly rich. The Mozart/Bach an etherial benediction on the proceedings of exquisitely calming beauty. These interpretations come together to form an improbably well-conceived and satisfying album by one of the finest quartets of the day, anywhere.
