I bought this on cassette when it came out. Closer to Fine floored me, and still does today. What an album.

Amazing album. My father had the cassette when I was a child and i grew up on late 80's and early 90's music. This whole album brings alot of heartfelt memories. Yeah, im a man but in the spirit of knowing, Man or woman, we dont get a second chance at life so always remember " Good music is good, regardless who sings it." ~Me, lol

I'm not sure if you girls read these, but I need to tell you that I started listening to you in 1989 when I was a freshman in college (art school in Portland, OR. a friend had your cassette, which we played to death in her car). And in all that time I have NEVER heard anyone who speaks to me the way you two do! I am forever altered and inspired by your music. Words cannot quantify how your melodies and lyrics have steadied me and carried me (STILL! 22 years later!) on the rocky road of life. "The Wood Song" is sage wisdom and you've been there with me singing that wisdom, and I thank you for that.

If you aren't ready for this album when you begin you can easily get lost along the way as you travel in these epic tales of insight. As you lose yourself in these stories you will be transformed when you come out on the other side. It is the closest thing to visiting Oz you may find without watching the movie. Similar to the trip Dorothy took, you will be looking for your way back home with the help of your new found friends, Amy & Emily. I heard "Closer to Fine" on the radio and was quickly drawn to it's wonderful lyrics, soaring vocals and grand harmonies. For whatever reason, after I bought the album I was intrigued by the song "Prince of Darkness". Contrary to what the title might imply (the title is part of the chorus, "I will not be a pawn to the Prince of Darkness any longer"), this is one of the most hopeful and beautiful songs ever recorded. After years of listening to fast, hard and loud music, this one song was a true awakening. When you lay your soul bare like these ladies do and have music, lyrics and harmony of this caliber, listeners can't stop from being transformed to a higher plane. You take similar journey's as you travel through "Secure Yourself", "Blood and Fire" and "Love's Recovery". This whole album is just amazing. The songs "Land of Canaan", "Tried to be True" and the single "Closer To Fine" are more upbeat in tempo but are all equal parts of this transcendent mix . "Kid Fears" is a haunting song that receives excellent backing vocals from REM's Michael Stipe. You can start at any point in this album and enjoy the spiritual treasures offered here. It will be a very worthwhile endeavor.

I grew up with the Indigo girls. Their music is such a comfort to me. I listen to it whenever I've had a bad day and can't sleep. I have (almost) all their albums and this one is one of my favorites. I like a lot of their newer albums as well, but this one is downright AMAZING! My favorites are 'Kid Fears' (brings back such memories), 'Prince of Darkness', 'Tried to be True' and 'Blood and Fire.' I love both Emily and Amy's songs; they're very different, but both awesome. Their harmonies are so beautiful!
