  • Not the group I grew up with.

I’m sorry I’m not a Mike McDonald fan. He changed the Complete sound of their group and it doesn’t mix any more than oil and water. Either be a blues fan or a California rock ‘n’ roll band.

I was very leary of this album. After the lackluster last album "Liberte'" I wasn't sure what to expect. Fortunately the Doobies have redeemed themselves. Walk This Road is a very good effort. Maybe the addition of Michael McDonald takes some of the songwriting pressure off of Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons. Regardless they did well. The two songs getting a lot of airplay are Walk This Road which features both McDonald and Johnston and Call Me. Both are very good modern Doobies songs. Great arrangements and hooks that stay with you. Two other songs of note are Speed of Pain, a very good Michael McDonald song and State of Grace which is Pat Simmons at his best. If you like Simmons you will love this. It's good to see a band that has been around for over 50 years still able to put out quality music. This one is definitely worth the money.

Solid album with all three lead singers from the Doobie Brothers long history and the added bonus of Mavis Staples Vocals on the first track 'Walk This Road.' Some of the reviews are knocking Michael McDonald, I've been a fan of The Doobie Brothers from the begining to the present. I don't get the age old arguments of fans, Ozzy Osbourne or Ronnie James Dio, David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar, Bonn Scott or Brian Johnson. I like all eras of these bands. Michael McDonald was asked to join The Doobie Brothers When Tom Johnston couldn't physically continue with the band in 1975. It's great that after 50 plus years this band delivered a really good album of new songs in a time when good music is hard to find.

This is a really good album. But every review I read about the Doobie Brothers seems to focus on Tom Johnson & Michael McDonald, with a mention of Patrick Simmons. All are hugely talented and deserving of the recognition they have earned. Every lineup has created great music, and we have been the beneficiaries of it all. But John McFee rarely gets a passing mention. Yet he is a virtuoso musician not only on guitar, but all stringed instruments including the fiddle and pedal steel guitar. He is also a highly respected producer and studio wizard, who has been in many respects the glue since joining the band in 1980. His work with Southern Pacific and with Peter Lewis is also notable. If we could peel back the tracks on this album, we would have a much greater appreciation for all he contributes to the band’s sound, and I expect the band members would readily and enthusiastically agree. More great work on this fine album, Mr. McFee. Many thanx.

nice job of mixing up the lead vocals. For a band to be performing at this level after fifty years I have to give 5Stars. The songs are good and get better with each listen. Keep Rockin' guys. TB Wonder

For me, Michael McDonald was the sound of the Doobies. His voice was so rich and smooth. I hate to say it, but he sounds terrible on this album. His voice sounds strained and scratchy. At times I wasn’t even sure if it was him singing. Looks like I’ll stick with their older music.
  • Michael McDonald is NOT a Doobie Brother

I guess I was waiting for at least something that resembled the REAL sound of the Doobies and not another collaboration with guests. Those who comment that M.M. is a “real Doobie Brother” must not have heard them before he filled in for Tom Johnston while he recuperated. I know tragedy has affected the make-up of the band thru the decades but the M.M years were not their best. “Disciple”- best song hands down!
