One of the best Radiohead Covers. When i saw them preform this live, they did a better job than this version they got here. But I recommend it. This is one of the greatest Radiohead songs too. -f

Not many people could pull this song off, but my god, Gillian Welch has the perfect tourted country voice with a blend of bluegrass and country to make this song into something that would even make Thom Yorke's ears perk up. There will be the Radiohead die-hards that will hate her for even attempting to cover the song, but if you can get past your bias, this song is simply stunning.

Black star- Amazing cover of a Radiohead song. Not much interference for a live recording, aside from a few choice cheers that I would second. Memorable, emotional, and so melodic it'll make you cry. Pocahontas- Cover of a Neil Young song; upbeat, does good tribute to the original. I have always wanted to hear this song sung by a woman. I've not been a fan of Cash's interpretation, so this was more up my alley. White Freightliner Blues-Townes Van Zandt cover. Good energy, upbeat for Welch, brings the album up to complete this lovely 3-song disc. Great string work in this one, pretty fun song. Don't stop here.. she has so much more you can explore. Enjoy it. It's rare to have a talent so raw but completely new and amazing... as Welch nowadays. Enjoy!!!

"Black Star" is one of my FAVORITE covers that Gillian Welch performs (and there are many great songs to chose from in that category....). There is also a cool t-shirt with this EP art that I got from her site.

Almost as good as actually seeing them live. Do yourself a favor today and listen to all of it.

This is the best three bucks I've spent on I-Tunes. I've been playing "Black Star" to friends (who usually turn up their noses to anything remotely country sounding) and it's been a big hit. Yeah, I liked the other two as well, but I'm not as music savvy as most and I really can't argue my case. I just liked 'em.
  • Absolutely gorgeous...

Until I heard Gillian Welch, I would have thought that only Johnny Cash could sing "Pocahontas" without it sounding cheesy. BOY was I wrong. This EP is wonderful. Black Star is a joy, Pocahontas a revelation and White Freightliner Bluer a bonus. Highly recommended EP. These live EPs are all I have time for - and this one lives up to the bill. Gillian is amazing and this can be for the appreciator or for the novice. It appeals to all. ENJOY it - I know I am.

Just to clarify another review/comment, the Johnny Cash version of Pocahontas is now available in the box set. Just do a search.

Black Star = Radiohead cover Pocahontas = Neil Young cover White Freightliner Blues = Townes Van Zandt cover Black Star sounds great. I can't stand any other version of Pocahontas since Johnny Cash covered it (a to die for cover his is! sadly not available on i-tunes). And WFB is funny is a Gillian Welch sorta way. The upbeat plucky melody contrasts the lyrics that half of her friends have died. Very charming in her cynical sort of way. Thanks I-tunes and GW for the EP!
