The symphony doesn't sound anything at all to me like Nos. 8 or 9. Both of those were big and serious. This sounds like a less serious suite for orchestra. On the other hand the Overture is a winner! Thrilling!

I heard this symphony when It premiered at the proms at July 2013. It’s essentially a mashup of material from the 8th and 9th symphonies. Come on, Philip. I know you’re famous for repeating things, but at least in the 8th and 9th symphonies, you TRIED SOMETHING DIFFERENT. That being said, what I’ve heard of the concert overture is enjoyable. Now, there, you’re trying something different.
