    There are several bluegrass tribes, and all have distinctive sounds. Bill Monroe from Kentucky, The Country Gentlemen which started the sound in the DC area, then......there is Ralph Stanley. He sounds like he created the eastern slopes of the blue ridge mountains around Roanoke VA. There is a distinctive and ancient quality in his style that takes you to early, and somewhat hard times. Ralph Stanley is an American artist of the highest caliber.
