  • Love at seventh sight

Unlike From the Sounds Inside, Inside of Emptiness, Curtains & The Empyrean which were all love at first sight, Enclosure and I had a rough start. It took me a few tries before even getting interested. The first run through headphones did the trick to me. After that I was hooked and my subconscious was begging for more. The haunting drumbeats, the synthetics loops and the lamenting lyrics went from aggravating and incoherent to a sort of bliss.

I understand someone not liking this album: it's a really challenging sound too be absorbed with just a few rounds of listening... The truth is, this is a piece of highly elaborate music. It has the perfect mixture of frusciante's usual amazing guitar composition abilities, amazing screams, voice harmony, sampling placement, lyrics and experimental beats that defy the average listeners understanding. The acid type beats and effects are so well-placed and this album as well as on pbx... Sleep, zone, fanfare, cinch, run, shinning desert.. I think this cd is a higher experience for those who have musical training of some sort (if you play drums or guitar, even better). People get freaked out by when he intentionally places some freaky sounds that seam exaggerated and misplaced... But it actually is so well balanced! It adds a necessary darkness, weirdness and weight. It's frusciante, he is not clean cut, it's all about playing with the limits of music and still making it highly enjoyable. He knows what's necessary for the overall amazing experience... I suggest listening to it with good quality noise canceling headphones, it's very trippy and beautiful. Frusciante writes songs and evolves musically in a way he seams to be squeezing my musical insides and giving them life.

John, you are an amazing artist. However, your last few albums are starting to sound the same. I don’t mind the electronic aspects of your music, but would love to hear you play the guitar again. you are gifted with the guitar in your hands my friend

His most interesting and wonderful new work just blows me away. The drum beats are crazy and all over the place. Sort of Apex Twin like but with John's awesome guitar. This stuff is sooooo much better than anything he has ever done with RHCP. This record should have followed Niandra Lades instead of all the filler crap that he put out. This is the first record since Niandra that really delivers incredible song after incredible song. BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!
  • Not really music

Maybe some will like this album, and that's great for them, but I don't know why and I hate to say it, it just isn't what I consider music. This is like Red Hot Chili Peppers suddenly becoming a country band. Some are going to follow and keep buying the brand, but most wouldn't. Maybe he wants to consciously shake all of his old fans. I don't know why. We loved what he did with RHCP and his early solo stuff. Our appreciation of his art made him wealthy and comfortable. I just can't buy this because it has John's name on it. There's nothing enjoyable about it at all. It makes me sad and concerned.
  • John's idea of time

I've seen a couple of interviews where John critiques other players saying they all play on a 16th note grid and wether they like it or not most musicians will always land directly on one of those 16th notes. He goes on to say that he deliberately plays before or after the note is supposed hit, creating a style of playing that sounds like he is rushing or dragging. You can definietly see him implement this on "Run". I think its stupid. Notes are intended to land in certain places and when Mr. Froosh changes tempo every 2 seconds the song stops making sense. Whatever, if he thinks its cool, more power to him.

Listen guys I love John Frusciante. But his last three albums (this one included) are a hodgepodge of styles that aren't always working together well. I thought the Empyrean was one of the best albums I've ever heard. Loved everything he he'd done solo before that as well. But this just isn't good! For God's sake John, let me know when you change it up again. I won't waste money on another album like this.

If you're more of a Curtains, Will to Death, Inside of Emptiness type of fan, this probably won't be quite up your alley. Fans of To Record Only Water, The Empyrean, and PBX/Letur, however, in my opinion will love it. It's gt arrangements that maintain the fundamental greatness of Frusciante but through a voice that resembles a cleaner, easier-to-listen-to version of PBX and To Record Only Water. The job John does of weaving melodic vocals through each of these pieces is remarkable. Despite the comparisons, there is also an element to this album that is unexplicably new and original. It seems that most fans who have really given time to listen to the album vary in favorites, but to me, "Zone", "Crowded", "Stage", and "Sleep" are the most outstanding among a very high standard of other songs. Regardless, definitely worth a listen. Fantastic album.
