Keeping it Real

Many moons ago, I went to college with the original members of Crumb and I was huge fan from the first time I saw them. They had a self-produced album, one that I don't think is available anywhere today. It was raw and edgy, but the driving guitar riffs coupled with Robbie's haunted lyrics made for a great sound (I still have the CD). It was with great trepidation that I bought Romance in 1996, because typically when the local band goes major label, somehow the sound morphs into something it wasn't before and it's never as good. This album was a pleasant surprise as it actually surpassed (IMO) their first album in all the aspects that I loved. I have to say that the carryover songs from the first album (Love, Stuffed Animal), I liked the first version better, but my all-time top 3 favorite Crumb songs are on this album (Shoegazer, Shards and Carter). Score one for the local band keeping it real!
"Emo" fans listen

If you're a fan of today's "emo" "post-hardcore" "screamo" movement you have to pick up this album. As a whole it flows together very well. It was not released in 2005 it was actually released in 1996 and changed the way I listened to music. The lyrics range from sadness, anger and sometimes humoristic, but in listening to them carefully one can't help but feel the "emo"tional savvy from singer/songwriter Robby Cronholm. Personal favorites, "Crutches" & "Conversion Scale." "Shoegazer" is an emo classic. I rate albums as whole, This one delivers on so many levels from start to finish. One of the best bands that picked up the "emo" movement on the west coast in the mid-nineties.

Not necessarily easy listening outside of the acoustic track in "Carter" while it is an enjoyable album with hints of humor, sadness and even some anger that is mixed together well to create a nice debut album. Recommended but lyrics are not the focus of the album and does not serve well in deep interpretations of the music.
