This was never meant to be an operetta which Broadway tried to make it. The fun and passion is missing. The cast is not able to pull off the different styles of music. The London cast does a much better job at twangy western sound of "One More Angel" and Elvis type sound of the Pharaoh. "Close Every Door" is lacking the sound of a tormented person and the actor sounds like he is just going through the motions. If you like the fun of the original Toronto cast or the British movie cast you will be extremely disappointed with the Broadway cast. Some songs on this version, the Narrator was removed from making the lines make no sense.

I know everybody has their favorite recording, and most of the time it's because it's the first one they heard. Well, despite that being the case for me (I was raised on this recording), I feel this one is the best because it has the most character, and I find the late 70's/early 80's vibe in the arrangements to be delivered delightfully quirky. As I gets said, the arrangement is spartan compared to other productions, but for me that allows the music to provide the momentum instead of trying to overdo it. Highly recommended. Also agree that Laurie Beechman is the best narrator ever.

I once played the lead in this lead and it is very challenging to hit some of the vocal notes in this. It was very impressive that everyone in this sang so well. You should really watch the movie or see the play!
  • Awesome cast!!!!

I don't care what anyone says, this is an awesome cast. Laurie Beechman is the BEST narrator ever. When she sings Pharaoh story, nobody can top her.

I came across this musical my senior year in high school and from the opening bars, I fell in love!!! Laurie Beechman is a GIFT to this whole musical and to anything she touches. This cast recording SHINES because it's not overblown, or bombastic. BUY IT!!! You won't be disappointed!!!!
