These are our stories, this is our musical heritage, this is MY culture. What a delight to have our music re-interpreted by one of our own, and to have it done so beautifully. Sugar bum bum is a delight ; kitch would have been proud . J Schwartz-Bartz and Etienne play so well off of each other. Everbody's granny hummed rose in the kitchen , Etienne took me back on that one, a gorgeous tribute. The scope of calypso's interpreted here is a bit narrow favoring kitch and roaring lion and of all the sparrow songs 'ten to one is murder' is an interesting choice, I was looking for something a bit more playful from the sparrow catalogue, but I grant that it may not have fit the theme of the work. All in all excellent work, special praise to ben williams n and the percussionists whose work I thought was particularly stellar. Mr. Charles has come into his own as a jazz musician, his phrasing and voicing is uniquely his now. I can hear his music and identify it as his by ear which to this jazz novice is a sure sign of greatness.
