When I first picked up this album I was nonplussed, but it gradually won me over. I don’t think this record truly stands on its own—rather, it’s a companion piece. The reinterpretations here are more “conversational” than proprietary; they augment, reflect and deepen Scott-Heron’s swan song (itself, mostly reinterpretations), and remind us that music is more alive when it’s a dialogue. I’m quite happy to have both documents.
