That accursed, misguided album review up top there has stuck in my craw for weeks now. Perhaps because I don't come at this with any baggage of prior BHTM fanship or extensive exposure, I'm willing to let them earn their blues credibility with nothing more or less than their playing on this excellent album. I refuse to let cynicism dupe me into thinking this is anything less than a great blues album by guys who love the blues and love Robert Johnson. To my ears, schooled in the sounds and souls of Muddy Waters, Albert King, Lightnin Hopkins, Elmore James, BB King, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Freddie King, John Lee Hooker, Howlin Wolf, and the other blues greats, BHTBC has earned their creds without qualification. Trying to pin down the exact style and sound of the blues is a fruitless exercise so don't think that beats and styles outside of a rigidly 1960's chicago electric blues sound are some kind of forbidden fruit. Look back far enough and the beginnings of blues fall far wide of tiny modern definitions about beats and styles. Don't believe the vocals lack soul or authenticity. They're real. There's no us and them-who-ain't in the blues. "Everybody understands the blues. Everybody from one day to another have the blues." Who are we to argue with Albert? The real blues speaks to all our tortued souls. And, lo, this album speaks. Listen so that you may hear. Sure, who doesn't love the gritty, darker side of blues found in John Hurt, Howlin' Wolf, et. al, but don't try to limit the blues to the darkest, dirtiest shadows. Don't believe this album lacks in the requisite grit or shade because of an interpretation that's fresh yet anchored in its roots. For those that are open to it, this album is a treasure. How many bands just play the blues as backstage warmup? Big thanks to BHTM for doing it for all to hear.

We saw this show at Anthology in San Diego, and I am so happy they put out an album. I've liked Big Head Todd and the Monsters songs but never really bought their albums or anything. So I was slightly familiar with the sound... But when Big Head Todd came on stage and started singing I was blown away, and the whole night was such a treat it was an hour and a half of heaven. This album is FAN fricking Tastic. Robert Johnson's songs are legendary. The only "problem" I have with this album is where is Stones in My Pathway? My very favorite Johnson tune? Not enough room for that?

After seeing the tour passing thru Ann Arbor early Feb ,I knew this cd would be a keeper. Todd's vocal are as authentic as possible Malcolm, Cedric, Honeyboy and Hubert live and in person then add BB and more , Gotta Love It !

I didn't know the blues were so hot! After the Chicago concert, I said to Todd, "I get it now!" Now, you, get the cd now. It's a lot of good music.

Unless you're already a fan of BHTM, its a shame this record wont get the attention it deserves. This is simply a fantastic tribute to Johnson, and has brought together a number of torch-bearing musicians of the blues! There's a reason that Robert Johnson's music is still celebrated today, and "the club" has succeeded in bringing his very essence back to life on these tracks. Do yourself a favor - pick up this little gem, and get to know where the roots of American music came from!

This album is an excellent example of old school raw blues. I love Todd's vocals and the musicianship is fantastic. Thanks for another great album.
