Better than Fall

By BrianSwaldi
This album is a better effort overall than Fall was. His best song is on this album. Summertime Song picks up where Mexico left off by giving us a bright and (obviously) summery tune that works great and is an awesome track to play in the car all summer long. Those kinds of songs are his best - and this is the best of his best. I can't understand why it's not listed as more popular on Itunes. Jesse James was also a great song. Talk about a suprise. It's swampy and hard. Definitely not a tune that I would expect from a stereotypical country dude like Walker. Wrong Enough to Know is also a pretty decent song.
Many of the rest are still very cookie-cutter country tunes. Lots of paint by numbers songs that you can find coming out every single week that do nothing to set him apart from the rest. Take the John Wayne song for example. I HATE the stereotype of glorifying John Wayne as some sort of archtype for what constitutes a "man." He wasn't what macho guys have him built up to be. The reality isn't the same as his image. His real name was Merriam and he was a prissy dresser. This just goes along, though, with the cookie cutter country songs that all just feel so comfortable with fitting in the stereotypes. And I don't get why Where Do I Go from You is such a big hit. It is way too peppy considering the lyrics. It just rubs me the wrong way.
2 great songs and 1 good song is far better than Fall provided. Only Mexico was truly a good song. He seems to be able to craft about 1 to 2 hits per album. He still needs to focus more on riding on Kenny Chesney's summer coattails. That's his real skill.

Who Writes the Reviews for iTunes?

Looking at what the iTunes reviewer said about contemporary country "warmed over '70s rock that passes for much of the genre's music today" makes me wonder about how they choose the folks who do the reviews. I really wonder how various publications and online services choose their "experts" to comment on the worthiness of a musician's body of work. The person sure doesn't seem to know much about most of country music in my humble opinion based on a statement like the one I pulled from his/her review. With that off my chest, I think this is one of Clay's better albums if you like honky tonk style songs check out "A Double Shot of John Wayne" and "Jesse James". I like almost all the tracks on this one and I certainly agree with one of the other customer reviewers who posed the question of why CMA and other award shows don't invite this outstanding twenty year country artist Clay Walker over pop and rock stars like Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow.
