Hey - I'm not sure who did the review for this album, but he or she was unkind at best and unrealistic at worst. Freddie is sounding seriously tight on this album. Yes it is overly-mixed I'll concede that, but once you get with the idea that it wasn't Freddie's fault as many a fine jazz player was roughed up by Columbia Records like Maynard Ferguson for instance during the 70's and 80's, you can stop whining and enjoy what Freddie is saying everytime he puts his gorgeous horn to his lips. This was the first album I ever had of Freddie's and it was a gift for recovering from a brief bout with appendicitis. I listened and listened to this album until it was unlistenable (remember vinyl?) and was heart broken when I couldn't find a replacement. Freddie sounds great and has some serious killer grooves to blow over the top of and even contributes a couple of tunes. If you put Rick Braun, Joey Summerville, or any one of the new talent doing contemporary jazz this would be a serious treat and Freddie had already been there and done that by the 70's! He went back to his traditional roots by the 80's and did one more album called "Ride Like The Wind" and mentions in the liner notes and I quote, "Some of the music jazz people put down is good music and shouldn't be ignored". Welcome to some of that music.
