This is somewhere between a symphonic tone poem and a work like Howard Brubeck's Concerto for Jazz Quartet and Orchestra ( Sony Classical) with the fullness of a great jazz disc. The best part about "Cityscape" is it has melody, and rhythm without the tedium many jazz composers tend to lean on when they write for full orchestras. Habanera and Nightwings have the 'flow" that I love, and each track works indivdually or with its surrounding pieces. I often used to listen to a Beethoven work by "mixing" the movements in various orders and discovered the good ones work in any direection or order. This realy hit me when I had my player on shuffle while listening to "Cityscape"...It took me almost two complete plays to realize what I had done...THAT works! "Cityscape" is just ear desert! Have seconds!

The late, great Mike Brecker's virtuoso sax playing was really highlighted with his collaboration with the master, Claus Ogerman. The duo was able to create a musical horizon that was both exciting and surreal! The avid jazz listener will tend to crave for more after the end of each and every track!

Brecker's tenor saxophone playing is just simply masterful, in the lush settings that Claus Ogerman provides for for him to really BLOW on. This recording is highly recommended!
