After seeing Hubert Laws and his quintet give a terrific performance Saturday night, Oct. 2 2010 at the new Musical Instrument Museum Theater in Phoenix, I had to fill out my collection with his music. His arrangements of classical music for jazz quintet (Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and the Rachmaninov 2nd Piano Concerto) were very impressive. This album is a bridge between his 'boppish' and his funk to smooth sides. When you hear him perform, you see that to him it's all just music: he loves it. This band has exceptionally strong sidemen and the music has held up very nicely.
