  • Wanna Hear Early Genesis Out-takes?????

After ANT left Genesis in the mid '70's (due to panic attacks on-stage) I thought he kinda faded away. NOT SO!!!! After listening to this offering you can definitely tell he had a great influence to the early Genesis sound. Great stuff to listen to if you liked the early "cult" Genesis.
  • Think you like Genesis? Think you know Genesis?

One listen to this album explains that Phillips was as responsible for the progressive sound of early and middle period Genesis as were Gabriel, Banks, Rutherford, or Hackett. Most of Nursery Cryme was written in large part by Ant, who left due to stage fright, leaving room for Steve Hackett. This is a fat, romantic, album of sweeping progressive epics and ballads, with careful songwriting and not too much instrumental showing off. Very beautiful, and not very "edgy". Just a great example of well-crafted symphonic, thematic progressive rock.

An excellent follow-up to TGATG, yet totally different compared to the grandiose, pastoral majesty of that album. This album show Ant bringing more of the rock edge he so deftly wields and, with the dynamic rhythm section of King Crimson founding member/drummer Michael Giles and emotive bassist John Perry, it is a treat to behold. Note the searching guitar passes on "Birdsong" and the layering on "Greenhouse". One of the many high points is, of course, the title track and A.P. shows his mastery of the electric 12-string with its tremendous build-up during the verses. The middle section is an amazing song unto itself. Top notch.
  • A good update of an excellent album

This has been one of my favorite albums since I bought it when it first came out. I've been looking for the CD remaster, and I was glad to see it become available through iTunes Plus. The bonus material is mostly instrumental versions and demos of the songs on the album, and the excellent musicianship of the players shines through with the vocals removed. A worthwhile addition.
