In a world where two minute rap/pop/disco songs fulfill carnal pleasures for the masses, Boris/Kurihara revel in the subconscious, background energy of the universe, the energy that keeps the universe alive, ignites stars, spins galaxies, and keeps run on sentences running. Not a doom record, but we've heard that already anyway. So buy this beautiful record, and get the vinyl for your girlfriend...
Phenomenal

This album has very quickly become my favorite (of the several Boris releases I have so far heard). This is simply staggering stuff. They even manage to work a bit of a folk sound in. My absolute favorite tracks on the album are "Water Mark" and "Rainbow." Who knew Wata could sing!?
AMAZING.

I also was stunned to read so so reviews, this album is absolutely amazing, no matter "what boris" your into.. If someone said this album was only decent to me, I would question their credibility for sure.
BUY NOW.

This album goes to show you that Boris is an amazingly versatile act. However, this album may turn off a lot of fans for its lack of crazy freakouts that many fans have come to expect. If you're new to Boris, you should probably take a listen to some of their other stuff before this, and its also necessary to check Michio Kurihara's band Ghost. If you like both, start with a track like Rainbow to see if this album is for you.
I Applaud Boris

I have never understood why listeners won’t let an artist progress. Boris is displaying some good versatility. I know they are “doom metal’s darlings,” but why can’t they take different directions? Boris seems to be consistent with the quality of their releases. This isn’t Linkin Park versatility, where they took out turntables and rapping and called it an expansion of their sound. What Boris is doing is utterly more tangible and credible. Songs like “Rainbow” are relaxed and entrancing. Other songs such as “Shine” are cinematic. The guitar intro for “No Sleep Till I Become Hollow” gives Jack White a run for his money. I like everything they have done so far and this album is no exception. The Sunn O))) collaboration album “Alter” is amazing as well. Buy this album and “Alter” and you will be able to listen to two different extremes and feel completely satisfied in the process. Not bad for a group of art students that started this band as a dare.
pritty cool.

I'm a bit astonished by the negative to lukewarm reviews posted here. Which is why I decided to write one. This album is great and proves why Boris is one of the most exciting and versatile acts around. They've done a number of collaborations, but I think this is their most accessible to date. Kurihara is an undeniable guitar visionary and he really adds something special to the sound. There are droning fields of noise, soaring solos, and an evolving sound that oscillates between sheer melody and blistering distortion. The sound of artists making art. If only Boris fans were as open-minded as Boris themselves are!
a rainbow of okayyy-ness

if you are a fan of the ungodly heavy boris, you will be disappointed in this. if you are a fan of the more experimental, ambient boris, you would probably like this. if you are a fan of both boris and kurihara, you could be delighted. i found this album to be quite good, very different from a lot of the other work boris has done, collaborations or by themselves. very polished and clean sounding, and the guitar work is outstanding of course. given a few listens, this album could become quite addicting. it all just depends on your taste.
