Nice to see R.E.M. back with their first recording since "New Adventures in Hi-Fi." It's a shame they haven't done anything since this single.

This is an AWESOME song! All you people who say R.E.M. are being hypocrites are SO wrong. This is a great song! Buy it! It's totally worth it! R.E.M. Doing a John Lennon song! Best of both worlds. John is great, but I like this version better than the original.

I've always found John Lennon to be tedious, requiring a more subtle ear than mine to recognize whatever collectively agreed upon (as opposed to instantly recognizable) genius he may have imparted. There were however a handful of songs that would have been hits for just about anyone, and this is one of those. I was expecting a great departure from REM, but they managed to emulate the feeling of this song, while at the same time adding their own signature jangle. The effect being that it is instantly recognizable as an REM song, with the added humor of being recognized as penned by John Lennon. A fine cover.
  • The best of Instant Karma

Of all the compiled songs on Instant Karma, #9 Dream by R.E.M. is the best of them (though it's not hard to beat Green Day's butchering of "Working Class Hero"). R.E.M. has added their own style to the song that still stays true to the overall feeling i think John was trying to get across. Frankly i'm pretty disgusted at how people rate this based off of Michael Stipe's view on the Beatles rather than the song itself. He basically said "The beatles were elevator music to me", but if you listen to a rolling stone interview, that's really not what he meant. It was supposed to be, i listened to other music and when i went in public all i heard was beatles music. He even talked with Yoko Ono about it, one of the key producers of this album and they JOKED ABOUT IT. People have to get over it and get past it and look at the genius in this remake.

i really miss bill. what a difference it has been without him. i have thoroughly enjoyed their three previous albums... but having bill back is refreshing and relaxing. #9 is amazing. i couldnt stop listening to it... or "cant". stipe is the one man you can count on to completely understand lennon's "vision". excellent rendition of an even more excellent composition. R.E.M. is getting back into the game... listen... you can hear it ;)

i love r.e.m. but i hate this. it's dull, emotionless, and puts me to sleep - in a bad mood. why didn't the producer do his job and make something worthy of the original material? less than one star.

Hey folks - Michael made his Beatle comments in 1995 - 12 years ago. Peter and Mike like The Beatles, and Michael is allowed to not like them if he wants to - you know - free country, liberty and all that stuff. This is a decent cover and it is for charity.
