Yep, I'm one of thoese people who didn't read the comments. Disappointed that it's filled with commentary, but as a former trumpet player, it's interesting!

Can't you read that it says "Orchestral Excerpts for Trumpet" i would guess that mostly explains that its not the whole piece.. I dont own this CD yet but i will soon. It shows people how these excerpts can be interpreted
  • Pay attention! I didn't.

I should have paid attention and realized that this was some sort of training audio. I didn't and as a result wasted my money buying this version of American in Paris. :(

This is a tool for pedagogy that I as a trumpet player am most grateful for. Highly recommended to trumpet players who listen/play orchestral music (not recommended to others). Let one of the greatest orchestral trumpet players of all time (the greatest in my humble opinion) give you a trumpet lesson. P.S. He records these works without the orchestra. P.S.S. If you thought he only sounded great because of the NYPhil this recording will blow you away!!!
  • Good tool for learning exerpts

It's also great for listening for relaxation. I find the album to be just as good as a performance piece. Smith's witty and informitive commentary adds to the experience. It's great fun to play at parties.
  • GREAT Resource

Ignore the 3 star rating someone else gave this. This is not meant to be listened to for fun. This is a great tool that I would highly recommend for any trumpet player with an orchestra audition
  • Well done

Of course, any of you who know this CD, knows what its purpose is for. Of course its not for casual listening, it's to help trumpeters prepare for auditions and find excellent interpretations of experts. Phil Smith does an excellent job of this
  • Why so popular?

While Philip Smith is an amazing trumpet player, I have no idea why this CD is so popular on iTunes. I would NOT recommend this for the casual listener. Most of the cd consists of his notes to other trumpets on how to play each piece.
