Even So

even ten-plus years later, it's a total mystery to me that this band didn't explode. my only explanation for why it didn't is largely a "they're-clearly-before-their-time/ahead-of-their-peers" oriented explanation, but that's not at all satisfying. but this album stands up to anything - especially time. just buy it.

Mr. Tohlen is my English Teacher and sings amazingly

The lead singer is an English teacher. And a good musician. I give Tohlen a lot of crap in class, but he's a pretty cool guy. -AJB

okay i'm a junior and Brett Tohlen is my english teacher! this is so weird to hear him sing. he has a great voice though. I like this, i'll have to remind him to give me one of his cd's :)

Though “Even So” by Lewis is nearly 10 years old, it’s by no means dated. The songs blend enough rock, indie-stylings, haunting melodies, and timeless lyrics, to be listened to over and over again year after year. There are occasions in the songs where you catch a bit of familiarity that’s hard to place. In some instances, it’s true that his vocals are reminiscent of Thom Yorke’s of Radiohead; but only in some instances and the similarities to Radiohead end there. You get the feeling that this singer is far less narcissistic than Yorke and thus produces songs and lyrics that actually go somewhere, unlike many of Radiohead’s later offerings. Not only that, but the underlying music is entirely its own, with few relations to any other band in particular. The songs' foundation is a combination of excellent guitar work and solid drumming. THe guitars shift frequently from melodically soft and soothing to hard and pounding, varying often from major to minor keys to keep the sound strong and unique. The drummer keeps it all flowing, producing nice rolling rhythms in some of the songs’ softer portions and hard-hitting smashes for the energetic climaxes. In the end, you have a fantastic collection of songs that know when to play it soft in order to draw the listener into the lyrical landscapes created by the lead singer and also when to erupt into sheer energetic rock in order to drive the point home. Lewis’s “Even So” is a top-notch album that’s been on repeat in my home for over five years now.
