It's nice to see this work played on a period instrument. Nigel North has excellent skill and precision on the lute.

These are solid performances by Nigel North, and I enjoy the album (which, like most Naxos releases, is great value for the money). But I find that the lute sounds very guitar-like here, and I think this is due not to Mr. North's instrument or technique, but to the way the recording is engineered. On the one hand there is some overlayed reverb; on the other hand, it's almost TOO "up-close-and-personal," as one hears every squeak of the strings, every click of string against fret or finger. It's the combination of an "idealizing" reverb and a "realistic" decision not to edit out non-musical sounds that I find odd.
