Reviews

  • Have to agree, half of this is over-produced, otherwise would have been a 5. Still great music.

I have to agree with the one reviewer who said some of this stuff was "too smooth". You can tell what I mean when you listen to the album. Some of the tracks have that true natural gritty feel and sound (recorded in the late 60s/early 70's) that we loved in Broken Flowers, but the other songs have an extremely polished, clean sound to the point where you miss the true feel of the great ethiopian music of Mulatu's time. Still it's good stuff, but get Mulatu and the Ethiopiques Vol. 4 for the "real" Mulatu sound in my opinion, especially if you liked his Broken Flowers material.

If you like jazz and world music, this is something you should check out. Despite some of the other poor reviews, this CD has some amazing tracks such as Kasalefkut Hulu and Mulatu. There may be one two tracks that don't seem to have the same vibe, but overall this is a very interesting piece of work. I highly recommend it.

Yikes! Don't think you are buying that guy who created the incredible music for the "Broken Flowers" soundtrack. It's the same person but he's gone all "smooth" in his old age. Sounds like they put this one through a soul sucking production and it worked! Think Ramsey Lewis 30 years ago compared to his new work. Too bad! Dig up the old stuff instead.

I first heard of Mr Astatke from the 'Broken Flowers' soundtrack but was dismayed when I had to buy the whole CD just to get 3 of his tunes. Luckily this CD is available for purchase and I'm glad I did!! This is a wonderful CD for whatever mood suits you; cleaning the house, entertaining friends or just chilllin'..!!
