This new release from Oz Noy is certainly a candidate for his best-ever. There’s so much variety here and the numerous special guests were obviously chosen with great care and - much more important - are clearly having such a blast playing! Oz long since took over the “black man trapped in a white man’s body” title from John Scofield, and here he lets his limitless appetite for funk blaze through on every track. Noy has more variety of tones and attack than anyone this side of Jeff Beck, and showcases some new ones here, including phenomenal slide playing and out-Hendrixing Hendrix (with a huge assist from Corey Glover) on what may well be the definitive version of “Little Wing.” For newcomers to the wonderful world of Oz I’d still recommend “Schizophrenic” as the best introduction due to the strength of its compositions, but this new release is just as great and appeals to head and heart equally. With so many great guitarists in jazz it’s really hard to create a unique niche but Oz Noy has certainly done so. He’s as good as it gets, and this release deserves to be heard far and wide.
