  • Breathtaking Album

The Spektral Quartet is one of the only string quartets out there nimble enough to move between the worlds of these four pieces. The playing is polished and elegant at times, brutal and raw at others, but it always gets to the very core of the music. Sky Macklay’s “Many Many Cadences” is at once kinetic and witty, deftly setting the stage for an hour of music that will embrace physical exuberance, silliness, high-brow punning, and sheer sonic beauty. Dave Reminick’s “The Ancestral Mousetrap” is a tour-de-force; its macabre and asymmetrical music, coupled with the quartet’s impressive singing, brings Russell Edson’s words to life. The sore thumb on the album, the Haydn quartet, seems to somehow make sense amongst all this contemporary music. The interpretation is fresh and bold and violinist Clara Lyon’s glissandi in the second movement help to bridge the gap. Chris Fisher-Lochhead’s “Hack” bristles with energy. The quartet manages to navigate the score’s demands with verve, executing extremely complex rhythms and bizarre techniques but still able to snap back into perfect intonation when needed. This album really raises the bar for other young quartets out there!
