Conversation with my Son: Gangsters & Angels

I’ve been waiting for this song ever since the band previewed it during the RUSHMERE tour. It’s perfect—just like when they performed it live. I had just become a new father, and in some way this song felt deeply connected to what I was feeling at the time. To me, it represents all the different conversations and situations in life that fill it with matter and meaning. Starting the song with pure serenity and ending with such honest words is truly special. 10/10. I can see why Marcus Mumford considers it one of his favorite songs he’s written. This album feels just as pure and honest in that same sense. Opening with “Here,” featuring Chris Stapleton’s rustic country voice blended with the band’s sound, is incredible. I loved Gigi Perez’s verse on “Icarus,” and following that with “Shadow of Man” was brilliant. Everything felt methodical—the order of the songs and the features were all on point. Honestly, I think Gracie Abrams could’ve been added to both “Badlands” and “The Banjo Song.” She would’ve absolutely crushed it. I will forever love Mumford & Sons. In a time where very few bands know how to grow and evolve with the times, they continue to age into each new era of music so naturally. Ted, Ben, and Marcus are clearly loving this chapter of the band, and you can hear it in the music. They’ll always have a fan in me—a guy who doesn’t look like he’d be listening to them, but who’s falling in love with them all over again with “Prizefighter.”

From the intimate mix to the poignant lyrics and musical prowess, this album is fantastic! All of their albums are great, but this one is just at a new level of songwriting maturity and demonstrates their growth as patient masters of the musical craft. Outstanding!
Best Since Babel.

Wonderful from beginning to end. Prizefighter reminds me of how I felt when Babel first came out. Mumford and Sons just getting better with age.
Hope

If the rest of the album stacks up with these previews, it could be their best effort yet.
