“The Fate of Ophelia” misunderstands the very tragedy it borrows from. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Ophelia doesn’t die from lack of love, she dies from lack of autonomy. Her story is about being silenced, used, and stripped of agency until madness becomes her only language. Taylor’s version reframes that as a romantic rescue, where a lover saves her from despair, but that misses the point. Ophelia didn’t need to be saved by love; she needed the freedom to save herself.
