It needs a fuller musical sound. I hope I examined that right The lyrics are fine and some ppl are too harsh on here. The album isn't as great as the '90's album, and I think this album has a great potential for something even bigger. Keep at it guys. You are great.

Great new album from Nelson. The new songs are some of their best, especially: Invincible!

As another reviewer indicated, this release may be about a contractual obligation with Frontiers records. Matthew and Gunnar juggle multiple projects, and are currently focused on a new, acoustic/country rock project, as well as touring extensively paying tribute to their late father’s music. Their previous “Nelson” release “Lightning Strikes Twice” was surprisingly good, which raised my expectations for this release. Unfortunately, this release is mostly filler and it’s evident this brand of music is no longer their passion. “Back in the Day” and “Rockstar” are typical big-chorus rock songs that fit in OK. The vocal on “What’s Not to Love” sounds a little like Bon Jovi, but they manage to make it sound modern and fresh, even with a vintage 80’s sound. However, the main highlight for me is the power ballad “On the Bright Side”, as they’ve always delivered well-written ballads and acoustic-based tracks in the past like “Only Time Will Tell”, “Nobody Wins in the End” “Keep one Heart” and “Just Once More”. The rest of the album is somewhat forgettable, even after repeated listens. This release won’t gain them any new fans, but that’s to be expected. Keep an eye out for their new project which promises to be better than this.

It's always funny to see someone say about an artist, "they need to do this..." They made an album how they wanted to. They haven't lost their voices at all. Better than 90percent out there

A great album. I love the negative reviews that occur before the album is even released. LOL!!! This is Nelson, a mix of classic Nelson with a modern edge. Buy with confidence and blast with the windows down this summer!!! A+++

Nelson does not do “hard rock” well. This is a hard rock album, and a terrible one at that. Sure, the guitars crunch like never before, but it’s about the TUNES. And these tunes blow. Nelson is a pop band (power pop, pop/rock, etc…). They need to return to that - a style they actually do quite well, with great melodies, choruses, harmonies… Their claim that this is a “return to form” is a joke.

I’m not sure who is more culpable here: Nelson for recording these songs, or me for trusting Nelson enough to preorder this thing. I’ve been a huge Nelson fan for a long time. After the Rain remains one of my favorite records of all time. It was the soundtrack of many of my teenage years. Because They Can, while totally ignored, was actually a rather solid album, even if it went in a totally different direction. Imaginator was fantastic. And then things started going wonky. The Silence is Broken was nothing but a bunch of throw away songs from the Imaginator sessions with poorly written newer songs thrown in. Life was an excellent record, surprisingly - a solid pop record. Lightning Strikes Twice was solid, although not exactly memorable. Perfect Storm captured the tightness of the After the Rain touring band well, but was a sonic mess. And Before the Storm was a nice set of demos from the After the Rain days, but nothing to really write home about. So far I’ve been delivered three tracks from this album. They are weak and embarrassing to say the least. Corny lyrics. Lazy choruses. Unmemorable hooks. Are these just a bunch of songs they had laying around that they used to fulfill their recording contract to finally put the Nelson brand out of its misery? (I’ve read that this is the final chapter in the Nelson rock band and will be the last “rock” record). I always said these guys were totally underrated back in 1990 when the teeny boppers latched on to them. The songs on After the Rain were well crafted with excellent lyrics and catchy choruses. It was pop-rock to be sure, but live, it had an edge to it, and wow did they deliver live. Seeing how they’ve been so inconsistent since is frustrating. And now hearing these songs has just made me throw my hands up and give up. Don’t insult me as a fan with such lyrics as “i hope this doesn’t come across as scary. I hope it’s you when I lose my cherry” (Autograph). Now, seriously… you wrote that line down and said “Yeah, that’s it right there. That’s a keeper!" That’s ‘going out with a bang?’ That pushes you ‘to the very limit’ as your press release on the record says? C’mon, man! Don’t insult me. I was 16 when ATR came out. I’m 40 now. Do you think this is the crap I want to hear? I’ll update this review if by some miracle Frontiers is pushing out the weakest tracks leading up to the album release for some unknown brilliant marketing strategy I’ve not heard about before…

from what I’ve heard so far this album is everything you would expect from Mathew and Gunner, great melodic pop rock.
