Nothing wrong with experimenting, but I believe Muse is at their best as a harder rock band, like in this album.

I’ll break this down song by song, Dead Inside- Pretty solid song! I love the vocals and the dark riffs with just a hint of funky synth! Kinda makes me feel like I’m watching the Panic Station vid. 8/10 Psycho- Okay, so I love the song itself! It’s INCREDIBLY CATCHY, and the guitar and vocals are superb, but I’m a little bummed out about the cussing. Come on guys! You’re Muse! You don’t need to hide behind language! 6/10 Mercy- As a pianist, I love this song. The bright piano, fun vocals and decisive guitar is pretty awesome! 7/10 Reapers- NOW WE’RE TALKING! As someone who has grown up with rock, I absolutely love the dark guitar riffs, crazy solos and kick butt vocals! By far the best song in the album! 11/10 The Handler- This song is by no means my favorite, but I think that the guitar and Van Halen type feel really does add a lot to the song! 7/10 Defector- I have loved this song since I first heard it! The dark guitar and lyrics combined with the hints of funk make this such a fun song! 7/10 Revolt- Ehhhh, not really my think. Everything just sort of feels unfinished, and I think the song could have been much better. Everything just feels so mediocre, and not what I expect from Muse. 5/10 Aftermath- This was always a song that I would skip over in my Ipod, but once I got used to it I realized that it is actually really beautiful! Almost makes me cry, actually. 7/10 The Globalist- I used to be really intimidated by this song. 10 minutes!? Wow! But one day it came on and I was to lazy to change it, and by the end I was humming along! The beginning is a little slow, but it really does feel like a work of art! I love every bit of it. 10/10 Drones- Ehhh, I have mixed feelings about this song. Choir has always kinda been my thing, and I do think that the harmonies are LEGIT, but part of it feels sort of hollow. Maybe it’s just me. 5/10

There are very few bands that can crank out multiple great albums, but Muse is one of them. I stumbled upon this band while studying for exams and downloading music on my iPod. Starlight was in the top 100 list, so I bought it to add to my playlist. From there, I just kept listening to their songs, buying albums and never get tired of their music. There is a song for every mood, from Psycho to Invincible. I'm patiently waiting for their next album now that they have released 2 singles.
  • Greatest album by Muse.

In terms of lyrics and concept, does Drones fall flat? Maybe a little - their political and social commentary was not necessarily unoriginal, but within its own album, it was somewhat trite. But then again, it is a concept album - and even then, as (ignoring the concept) an album, it was amazingly done. Each of its tracks was arranged well both "plot"- and sound-wise; it was extremely cohesive, and its production (as well as, of course, Matt Bellamy's delivery of its lyrics) did that justice. As such, I personally would not listen to singular tracks on Drones - the complete experience is so much more rewarding, and rewarding it is for certain. As a long-time Muse fan, I am definitely not disappointed!
