Proof of the Mediocrity

The perspective of someone who is not a Dead-head is needed here. i was a hippie surfer when the band started and liked a few of their songs but never thought much of their fall-apart harmonies and lazy, soporific jamming or their lackluster songwriting. The same is true today, as my instincts and tastes remain much the same about this band. If you dig them, well, that’s your taste and also your failure of critical faculties. The “best of “ album contains a couple of their very best songs—“Touch of Grey” and “Estimated Prophet”—along with a bunch of mediocre stuff that only someone with a dead head could groove to. One song that definitely should have been included, though: “Morning Dew,” a very nice cover of that classic. The rest of this collection is music that fans may not be grateful for, since they already have all these songs, and newcomers may be left wondering what all the fuss is about. I like Bill Walton, but think he needs to get over the Dead.

My favorite driving-around playlist is just this album, "Best Of The Grateful Dead" and "So Many Roads", on shuffle. It's a constant delight to hear the choice studio cuts mixed in with choice live cuts. The Dead were picky in the studio, and it's fun to hear their carefully constructed studio tracks mixed in with later live versions.
I love this band—

I really do love this band. I turned 17 on March 27th, when this album came out with all the remastered versions, which I thought was pretty cool. I could never give anything less than five stars. If you're a new fan, you definitely have to hear their Woodstock playlist. Their live music was excellent. I do prefer studio music with some bands though, because I can hear it very clearly. Definitely would recommend these songs to anyone. You should listen to the older versions of these songs, before they were remastered — excellent raw jams.
Great for beginners

I already have most of the songs on here. But this collection is a great starting point for a budding Deadhead. All the songs on here are their 'hits.'

I already have each of these songs…but they really sound great on this version. Garcia is way up in the mix, as he should be; Phil's bottom sounds deeper than any other version I have. Oh hell, I have to buy them again here.

To anyone new to the Dead, don't waste your time and money on studio albums of the Grateful Dead. If you truly want to hear the soul of the Dead, buy the recordings of the live shows or the live show albums. These are where you will hear the music the way it is meant to be appreciated.
