I purchased this album after falling in love with her voice on "Freedom Highway". T Bone Burnett's arrangements allow her voice to shine even more on this earlier production. Can't wait to see/hear her in concert in two months!
  • Granted me right away-her voice, her interpretation, her presence

Her cover of Dolly Parton's Don't Let It Trouble Your Mind is awesome! I'm so glad to see people digging deep into Dolly's musical archives and catching the true prolific songwriter that she is. Up A Above My Head is absolutely amazing! I'd love to her a full on gospel album like this from her!!!

I had the pleasure of hearing Rhiannon perform all the selections from this CD live at the Carolina Theatre in April 2015. Her voice is great on this cd and even better live. I’ve been a fan since hearing her and the Carolina Chocolate Drops live at the Quaker Friends house with Mr. Joe Thompson many years ago. It’s my favorite cd for the last two months.

The iconic voice of our time. I believe we are hearing history. The Holiday, Fitzgerald, or Smith with grit and fierce determination to develop each perfectly. She is my favorite singer right now.

This is one of the most delightful albums I have bought in years. After watching an interview with Rhiannon Giddens on PBS, bought this album. I was amazed at the variety of music on the album and I fell in love with her voice. I cannot wait for the next album. She said in the interview that she thought it important to preserve much of this music for contemporary audiences. I look forward to whatever she produces next.

Rhiannon is supremely talented as musician and a singer and I became aware of her from work on the New Basement tapes. I was really hoping this was going to be originals and not covers. It's my fault for buying impulsively I suppose. I don't care for the collection of song at all and it has nothing to do with her performance at all but the songs just don't resonate with me. On The New Basement Tapes she had the fortune of reinterpreting Dylans lyrics with a stellar group of musicians assisting and T-Bone Burnett producing with a lot firmer hand than he does on this outing. In fact at times this album barely sounds like a T-Bone Burnett produced album to me. I realize some might be offended by what I'm saying given that these songs are by the likes of Emmylou or Patsy etc. but the sequencing of the album is kind of ackward as well...
