I agree with the people saying that the whole "sell out" is corny. It is. What's wrong with melody? You see people who cry sell out are the same people who wear eye makeup and wear spiked wristbands at concerts basically trying to fit in. Every good band has melody and explores different sounds. Mastodon could make a death metal album if they wanted to. They chose not to.

I'm sorry. I tried to like this, I really did. I wanted to have a flawless discography from a band so very bad, but.... No. Let me start by saying I love mastodon. I think we call agree they're fantastic. But I want to make something very clear: Brent Hinds does not care for "the evolution of metal," so for those of you who are a little confused saying things like "it's Mastodon, they're taking the genre to different places" the answer is no. No they are not. Hinds is trying to leave the heaviness behind one step at a time. So, is this "pop metal?" Not exactly. This is a rock album. Not the kind of rock that gets people into heavy metal in the first place, but rather something along the lines of Foo Fighters or The Chili Peppers. It's party rock at worst, and pseudo-prog rock at best. Now, hear me out. This album gets three stars from me for one reason: Mastodon has more than earned the entitlement to make an album like this. Guys, listen to their entire discography and tell me, just TELL ME they're not accomplished musicians. You can't, can you? No. Because they are quite accomplished, I see no harm in putting out an album that, more or less, doesn't have quite the same artistic draw as their past efforts. It's not unlistenable, after all. But is it satisfying? As a long time fan since day one, (yes people, I am partial to the Remission/Leviathan/Blood Mountain days. Sorry not sorry) I can't say I'm not disappointed as a listener. But as a fan? Hell, I can't blame them for venturing back onto the beaten path after being off so long. What once was an art for them has become a career, and quite frankly Mastodon deserves it.
  • One of their best!

Once More Round the Sun is one of their best efforts. Complex, dark, and not at all forgettable. Each song stands alone with zero repetition throughout the record. They've mixed the guttural growls and ethereal vocals extremely well. I've been a fan since Remission and they NEVER disappoint. Keep rocking guys!!

This is one of those albums you can just jam through. In my opinion....other than "Motherload" and "High Road" check out "Asleep In The Deep" "Halloween " "Aunt Lisa". Such unique riffage!!
