Legendary Performances

Joseph Silverstein--the concertmaster of the local symphony orchestra--is a musician's musician. His performance of Bach unaccompanied violin works first came to international attention on the weekly "St. Paul Sunday Morning", live on National Public Radio. It was subsequently one of the most requested rebroadcasts; so much so that it was finally retired from the show's request list. We are indeed fortunate to have these treasures on CD. Silverstein, more than any other musician in living memory, understands these works so well that his phrasing is a marvel--a kind of languaging that speaks to the listener. Although there are recordings of these works by Heifetz, Milstein--almost every famous violinist, Silverstein's are preferred; none of the others captures his phrasing nor the connectedness of Bach's musical lines. At $9,.99 for the two-CD set this is a must have for Bach lovers. Listen to the excerpt from Track 21, the famous Bach Chaconne, and you will be convinced. The original CDs (on CD Baby) are long out of print, so Apple is doing a major service to the classical music community by making them available on iTunes.
