Iggy deserved better

While Nude & Rude: The Best of Iggy Pop isn’t a terrible introduction to Iggy Pop, it certainly isn’t a good one either. To the casual Iggy fan, the songs on Nude & Rude might be enough, but to anyone that knows Iggy’s career there are some glaring omissions that makes this compilation seem incomplete and misleading. Instead of focusing on Iggy’s “best” material, the focus is more on his minor hits; especially on the second half of the album. The problem is that Iggy was never known for his hits. Not one song from The Stooges second album, Fun House (arguably the Stooges best record) or Iggy’s critically acclaimed New Values from 1979 shows up on the album. Oddly, his next three albums: Soldier (1980); Party (1981); and Zombie Birdhouse (1982); don’t make the cut either. The inclusion of the mediocre “Sick of You”; an obscure Stooges song, seems like an odd selection when there were so many other good songs from which to choose. All in all there are still many great songs here from The Stooges and his Berlin era albums The Idiot and Lust For Life. However, this compilation is a missed opportunity to show Iggy’s full breadth of work and ultimately fails to completely satisfy.
